Community and social service workers administer and implement a variety of social assistance programs and community services, and assist clients to deal with personal and social problems. They are employed by social service and government agencies, mental health agencies, group homes, school boards, correctional facilities and other establishments.

The Recovery Halfway House Worker/Addictions Counselor Diploma program is accredited with the Canadian Professional Counselors Association and the Canadian Addictions Counselors Certification Federation. This accredition serves as notice to students that our program meets the core competencies which both organizations require addiction counselors to have met. Students are enrolled as Student Members in the CPCA during the program.

Employment Trends
The occupation is termed "significant" due to the relatively high concentration of people working in this occupation within this geographic area.

Although most workers in this group are not government employees, they do work for non-profit organizations. Therefore, government funding plays a large role in the number of openings in this field.

The majority of workers in this group are between the ages of 25 and 34 years, making the overall average age for this occupation 37. In spite of such a low average age, job openings as a result of retirement are a definite possibility, as 34% of all community and social service workers are over the age of 45 years.

Seventy-four percent of all workers in this group are women. This is considerably higher than the average for all occupations, which is at 47.4%
